Graham Supports Kagan While Acknowledging “Plenty of Reasons for a Conservative to Vote ‘No’”
The question on everyone’s mind today was “Will Sen. Graham (R-South Carolina) betray his base once again and vote for the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court?” Well, the answer is “yes,” despite “plenty of reasons for a conservative to vote ‘no.’” Senator Graham says he looked at if she was qualified, if she has good character, and if she was someone who understands the difference between being a judge and a politician. “Quite frankly, she’s passed all those tests,” he said.
Graham purposely chose to ignore that, although Miss Kagan knows quite well the difference between being a judge and a politician, she has no problem violating those roles to achieve the results that would promote her liberal agenda.
Specter Supports Kagan “With Grave Concerns”
If you followed the news leading up to the vote today, you might have heard that there are strong rumors that Senator Specter (D-Pennsylvania) has been lobbying for a new position in the Obama administration now that his days as a senator are numbered. This sheds a bad light on the senator’s motive for voting for a confirmation with which he has had so many concerns. In fact, Specter has been concerned with Elena Kagan ever since she was nominated to be Solicitor General.
It does not look good.
Senator Kyl: Kagan “Disingenuous”
Senator Kyl (R-Arizona) called Kagan’s testimony before the Judiciary Committee “deceptive.” And the evidence supporting his conclusion is overwhelming. From her circumvention of the Solomon Amendment to her explanation of her written opinions on judicial activism, Kagan tried to diffuse her views, using Sotomayor-like, chameleon-style explanations that were clearly less than credible.
Getting to the Heart of the Matter
After studying her record, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) concluded what any reasonable person could conclude, that Kagan has a “hard time separating her deeply held liberal views from the law.” On issues of life, religious liberty, the Second Amendment, and many more, the law is just a tool Kagan would use to promote her liberal point of view.
Leahy: No Minds Will Be Changed
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) just appealed to senators for some “restraint” when making their comments on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court because he suspects that “no minds will be changed” by the senators’ comments.
As usual, Senator Leahy misses the point. Senators must engage in this debate and take this opportunity to let the American people know why Elena Kagan is not qualified to sit on the highest court in the land.
All Eyes on Lindsay Graham
Today at 10 a.m., the United States Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court, and all eyes are on Senator Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina). CWA members in South Carolina have been concerned about his stance on this nomination because his rhetoric has been similar to what he used during the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.
“Elections have consequences,” goes his mantra, which is nothing more than a poor excuse for betraying his base on one of the most important issues of our time.
The hope is that Sen. Graham learned his lesson with Sotomayor. She has been on the wrong side of almost every major case she has faced at the Supreme Court. From Citizens United, which protected our freedom of speech, to the Christian Legal Society case, where our religious liberties were infringed upon, and even in the recent McDonald v. Chicago case, where she ruled against the Second Amendment in direct contradiction to her oral testimony at her confirmation hearings.
Will it be “yes or no,” Sen. Graham? We are about to find out.
